Italy has got a biodiversity heritage which is among the most important in Europe both for the total number of different species and for the various endemic species. In the so called ‘Belpaese’ (Italian word used to enhance the beauty of the country) we can count over 30% of the animal species and almost 50% of the vegetal ones out of the total presence in Europe. Following these observations we can start our trip through the environment and the biodiversity! From the ISPRA 2021 Report:
Plants and pollinating insects represent an alliance for biodiversity. The pollination of flowering plants by animals is an ecosystem service of great value to humanity, both from an economic perspective and for the benefits it provides to wild and cultivated plants. More than 75% of major agricultural crops and about 90% of wild flowering plants rely on bees, wasps, butterflies, ladybirds, spiders, reptiles, birds, and mammals, and pollinators in general, to transfer pollen from one flower to another and reproduce.
All of this represents a fundamental basis for species ecology and the functioning of ecosystems, for habitat conservation, and for the production of food, fiber, timber, and many other products of great importance to humans.
Pollination, especially insect-mediated pollination, is the foundation of biodiversity, our existence, and our economies.Biodiversity (abbreviation of biological diversity):
the richness of life on Earth
