Si trova nella parte bassa dell’abitato di Pigge, in prossimità della vecchia strada statale Flaminia.
È una costruzione a pianta esagonale, realizzata tra gli anni 1581 e 1585 per proteggere un’immagine sacra rappresentante la Pietà oggetto, allora, di un sentito culto popolare.
L’ingresso principale è un portale in laterizio con la scritta Templum. Divae. Mariae. Pietatis. R. 1789, posto ad occidente.
All’interno della chiesa, oltre alla tela ricordata, segnaliamo un affresco riproducente la Natività, riportante la data “1595”, ispirata a quella del Perugino della chiesa delle Lagrime.
Scrive il Natalucci nella sua Historia … di Trevi: “… detta la Chiesa Tonda dal essere cusì fatta al di dentro, sento costrutta in ottangolo al di fuori; e chiamata ancora di Ponte Peccato…”.
Ricordiamo che nei pressi di questa chiesa era ubicato, secondo alcuni autori il Pons lapideus (= ponte di pietra) che divideva la parte sacra del fiume Clitunno da quella profana, ponte a cui si deve il nome di questo edificio religioso.
Si tratta di quello stesso ponte che “permetteva all’antica strada, ancora perfettamente identificabile in tutta la sua estensione, che congiungeva la località Torre di Azzano all’abitato di Trevi”.
Il tracciato stradale fu interrotto dalla costruzione del nuovo alveo del fiume Marroggia, ma la popolazione locale attraversa ancora il corso d’acqua (grazie ad un guado) seguendo la direzione dell’antica viabilità (e quindi del “vecchio ponte”), ignorando assai spesso le moderne deviazioni che consentirebbero l’utilizzo dei nuovi e certamente più comodi attraversamenti.

SANTA MARIA DEL PONTE ::: SAINT MARY 'OF THE BRIDGE'
This church is located in the lower part of the small village, nearby the old Flaminia state road.
It is an hexagonal construction built, between the years 1581 and 1585, to protect a sacred image representing the ‘Pietà’ at that time subject of a devotion popular cult.
The main frontal entrance is a brick portal with the inscription Templum. Divae. Mariae. Pietatis. R. 1789, which opens westwards.
Moreover the image afore mentioned, inside the church we can see a fresco reproducing the Nativity, evidencing a date ‘1595’; the local painter was inspired at that time by the very well known image of the ‘ Perugino’ located in Trevi and visible in the church of ‘Madonna delle Lacrime’.
Furthermore about it mentioned in his writings Durastante Natalucci (‘Historia … di Trevi’) by remarking that in Trevi it was known as the church of ‘Ponte del Peccato’ [‘ponte’ means bridge; ‘peccato’ means sin].
Speaking about bridges, we remember that nearby this church was edified, according to some authors, the ‘Pons lapideus’ (= stone bridge), just to divide the sacred part of the river Clitunno from the secular one.
The name of this religious building is due to the presence of this bridge.
This bridge, allowing crossing the ancient road still perfectly identifiable in all its extension’s, enabled to connect the locality ‘Torre di Azzano’ to the town of Trevi.
The road layout was interrupted by the construction of the new river bed of the river Marroggia; the local people still know how to cross the waterway by following the direction of the ancient road (by a ford, like using the ‘old bridge’), they are ignoring very often the modern deviations that would allow them to use the new and certainly more comfortable passing way.
